Connectivity
We’ve just talked about the excellent connectivity Rapids Landing has in every direction. A significant component in Stage 8 that completes this connectivity is the 250 metre extension of Leschenaultia Avenue to John Archibald Drive. This extension is now under construction.
It will create a wide landscaped avenue providing easy access to town. On each side will be the stylish Rapids Landing commercial and community hub with provision for a supermarket, specialty shops, tavern, medical and allied health, childcare centre, other services, children’s playground, and carpark.
There are already parties interested in being involved in this key community development in East Margaret River. Marketing this opportunity will coincide with the start of house construction on Stage 8 blocks in 2026, and the natural continuation into the next stage of Rapids Landing heading east along John Archibald Drive.
Rapids Landing has become the most interesting and diverse address in Margaret River for those who want the comfort and lifestyle of living in a modern home amid quality local facilities.
The Rapids Landing Name
A century ago, the name Rapids Landing was derived from rapids in Darch Brook which runs by it and from a government sponsored settlement that was also known as Group 23 in the Margaret River area. This was part of a 1920s programme to create dairy farms and reduce the need to import food. The scheme failed due to the inexperience of settlers, difficulties clearing land, unsuitable sites, and inadequate support services.
A Rapids Landing school operated from 1925 to 1927 for children of families who were part of the settlement and one of the young teachers was John Tonkin who went on to become Premier of WA from 1971-74. Appropriately the modern Rapids Landing Primary School is located on Tonkin Boulevard about 1 kilometre from the site of the original school. It acknowledges the historic links in the area.
