Why Rapids Landing

The Rapids Landing Name

The Noongar people had lived in the Margaret River area for 48,000 years before Europeans arrived in the 1830s and extracted timber until the resource started to decline in the 1880s. The first houses were built on the Margaret River town site in 1912 and in 1920 the state government, keen to see the area productive, initiated a group settlement scheme focused on dairy and mixed farming which was not successful. A centre for this activity was Rapids Landing where numerous facilities were established including from 1925-27 a school where one of the young teachers was John Tonkin who went on to become Premier of WA from 1971-74. The name endured and the modern Rapids Landing Primary School is appropriately located on Tonkin Boulevard about 1 kilometre from its original site.

Connectivity

We’ve talked about the excellent connectivity Rapids Landing has in every direction. A significant additional component in Stage 8 is the 250-metre extension of Leschenaultia Avenue to John Archibald Drive providing another access route to the town centre. This extension is due to open by July 2026.

On each side of the extension will be the stylish Rapids Landing commercial and community hub with provision for a supermarket, specialty shops, tavern, medical and allied health, childcare centre, other services, children’s playground, and carparks. There are already parties interested in being involved in this key community development.

All this makes Rapids Landing a sought-after address in Margaret River for access, comfort and lifestyle.
