A school project that
commenced last August will culminate with a striking display of
public art within the new parkland at Rapids Landing, which opens
later this month.
Margaret River Primary School was invited to
participate in an art project that would result in the students’
works being utilised in a mosaic featured, wave-like rammed earth
walls surrounding the Rapids Landing Playground.
Led by Art Teacher, Rhonda Dornan, Margaret River
Primary School embraced the opportunity to participate, with all
grades from 1 through to 7 participating in the mosaic art project,
completing around 350 distinct pieces.
“The creek that runs adjacent to the playground
was used as the stimulus for the theme, “species that live
by the creek”. Students were provided with images of animals
and plants that are native to this area and were able to choose
their own direction for their work” explains Simon Munckton,
Rapids Landing Development Manager.
“The result is a spectacular and eclectic
mix of flora and fauna as seen through the eyes of the children.
The playground will be a perpetual tribute to their youth for many
years to come.” Simon said.
Continuing the learning theme, the piers of the
walls will be ornamented with steel sculptures of birds native to
the area.
“The pièce de résistance
to the entire project is the installation of state-of-the-art play
equipment which will provide the children with an area to play that
has been stamped with their own individuality,” Simon continued.
The project is due for completion later this
month where it will be initially launched to the children of Margaret
River Primary School.
